The first official book authored by the core R Markdown developers that provides a comprehensive and accurate reference to the R Markdown ecosystem. With R Markdown, you can easily create reproducible data analysis reports, presentations, dashboards, interactive applications, books, dissertations, websites, and journal articles, while enjoying the simplicity of Markdown and the great power of. When I first started building my website, I decided to use Wix. It’s a great website builder that has lots of custom options – it is kind of like the PowerPoint of website editing. My one issue with Wix is that I wanted to easily embed some R code into its pages. I was already familiar with R Markdown, so being able to publish R Markdown documents directly would be ideal.

R-markdown code chunks

R-markdown is a markdown file with embedded blocks of R code called chunks. There are two types of R code chunks: inline and block.

Inline chunks are added using the following syntax:

They are evaluated and inserted their output answer in place.

Block chunks have a different syntax:

And they come with several possible options. Here are the main ones (but there are many others):

echo (boolean) controls wether the code inside chunk will be included in the document
include (boolean) controls wether the output should be included in the document
fig.width (numeric) sets the width of the output figures
fig.height (numeric) sets the height of the output figures
fig.cap (character) sets the figure captions

They are written in a simple tag=value format like in the example above.

Below is a basic example of R-markdown file illustrating the way R code chunks are embedded inside r-markdown.

Converting R-markdown to other formats

The R knitr package can be used to evaluate R chunks inside R-markdown file and turn it into a regular markdown file.

The following steps are needed in order to turn R-markdown file into pdf/html:

Convert R-markdown file to markdown file using knitr.
Convert the obtained markdown file to pdf/html using specialized tools like pandoc.

In addition to the above knitr package has wrapper functions knit2html() and knit2pdf() that can be used to produce the final document without the intermediate step of manually converting it to the markdown format:

R Markdown Tutorial

This book introduces the blogdown R package to create websites using R Markdown and Hugo. There are two major highlights of blogdown:
1) It produces a static website, meaning the website only consists of static files such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images, etc. You can host the website on any web servers. The website does not require server-side scripts such as PHP or databases like WordPress does.
2) The website is generated from R Markdown documents. This brings a huge amount of benefits, especially if your website is related to data analysis or (R) programming. Being able to use Markdown implies simplicity and more importantly, portability (e.g., you are giving yourself the chance to convert your blog posts to PDF and publish to journals or even books in the future).
R Markdown gives you the benefits of dynamic documents — all your results, such as tables, graphics, and inline values, can be computed and rendered dynamically from R code, hence the results you present on your website are more likely to be reproducible.
